CARS AND THINGS THAT GO
I have been painting large portraits of cars and other objects since the 80’s. I find that observational painting is still the most intense way to really see, and to blessedly lose my “monkey brain” thoughts completely. They are done mostly on site, in front of the vehicle. I find that with focused attention on an object a kind of “I and Thou” special relationship develops and the object becomes anthropomorphized.
The freedom to leave distortions both in shape and color that inevitably happen in my interpretive style have been inspired by expressionists and artists like Philip Guston, Alice Neel and David Hockney’s chair paintings.
To commission a Car or Bike Portrait please contact me at carolbuchmanartist@gmail.com. They are generally 40×40, acrylic on canvas, with an optional resin coating. I prefer to work at least partially from life, in front of the car or bike, but I can also work from a photograph.
