Cars and Things that Go

I have been painting large portraits of cars and other objects since the 80’s. Years later I find that observational painting is still the purest way for me to engage in the act of painting, still the most intense way to really see, and to blessedly lose my “monkey brain” thoughts completely. They are done on site, not from photographs.

I find that with focused attention on an object a kind of “I and Thou” special relationship develops and the object becomes anthropomorphized. For me, taking the time to truly know something, even an inanimate object, empathy and understanding results.

The freedom to leave distortions both in shape and color that inevitably happen in my interpretive style have been inspired by expressionists and artists like Philip Guston, Alice Neel and David Hockney’s chair paintings.
